The Northern Commercial Company was one of the early trading companies in the region, helping to open the region for settlers and later supporting the settlement of Alaska with a variety of goods, including machinery needed for the Gold Rush.

Third-generation, family-owned Tractor & Equipment Co. took the reins at N C Machinery in 1994. The result is one of the leading Caterpillar dealerships in the world.
